d.i.y. harcore basement show

so tawd bell here took me to a show last night at some house across the street from university of cincinnati. apparently the girls that live there host punk rock shows in their basement.

the basement fits about 40-50 people + 4 bands' gear + a "stage" area, which isn't really a stage. the ceilings are low with air ducts all over them, segregating the crowd by height. there is lame graffitti on the walls and two album covers behind the "stage" - barbera streisand (gack!) and what appears to be a record of the prophet by kahlil girbran. i wanted to steal it. this crazy d.i.y. hole-in-the-ground venue is lit with one bright "corprate light" (as it was refered to) by the stairs and one lampshaded 60-watt lightbulb that swings back and forth grazing the vocalist's head. it is packed with all manor of scenesters, from the hardcore/straight-edge kid to the guy with dreads longer and thicker than pythons to the cute girl wearing the exact same vans i have on (see, they are cool).

the show started lateer than expected with "fight like sinatra" from detroit. cool name. not so cool band. 3-piece. sloppy. out of tune. not interested. but hey, they seemed like nice enough guys.

the second band, though they take 12 years to set up, are well worth the wait. they are called "silencio" and are from columbus. they blow me away; i'm pleasantly surprised. band breakdown: 1) one guy on electric guitar (he is genius) 2) one girl on keyboard (she rules too) 3) bass player/roland sound machine/moog player (sweet!) 4) drummer (also amazing). they are instrumental, jazz/hardcore/math rock. crazy hard rock and roll, sweet jazzy breakdowns. altogether everyone is into it. it reminded me of "questions in dialect" if they were harder. "silencio," check 'em out.

band three is "sweetheart" - from columbus also. i didn't pay much attention to them because i was roaming around outside calling logan to leave him a message. sorry "sweetheart."

up last is "the dead hate the living," a cincy standard in female-fronted thrashy harcore. though i can't really latch onto this kind of music anymore, they're fun and everyone is into it. people are dancing and falling on the floor. this is what a hardcore show should be. on the last song the bass player sheds his instrument and joins the crowd, dancing in the pit. rock AND roll.

afterwards we go to "sitwell's," a coffehouse/bar type place. i have a hot chai (thanks for the spot tawd) and we get to talking to a couple of tawd's friends that are there. then we went home and had some good conversation on the way back about our brokenness before God. it was a good night.

this morning (between breakfast and chores) some of us went walking the neighborhood to begin asking God and listening to Him as to how we can "love our neighbors as ourselves." if you think about it, pray for norwood, that we at community house and vineyard central would have opportunities to actively and relationally love our neighbors; and that God's kingdom would be revealed in our community.

peace out...enjoy the weekend.
